When Granny Fi was a little girl she was promised a rag doll. She dreamt about this beautiful doll, with long blond hair and a rosebud mouth. Alas, when Gillian (the doll) arrived, she was a simple doll with dots for eyes, felt hair and a triangle for a mouth. Despite her disappointment, Granny Fi played with and loved Gillian.
When Granny Fi become a mother she was determined to make the doll of her dreams. She sewed late at night after her daughter, Beatriz, went to sleep, creating a doll with large blue eyes, a straight elegant nose — and a rosebud mouth.
For years Irene (the doll) went everywhere with Beatriz. They climbed trees and ran (too fast) down the ramp and the train station and both ended up flat on their faces. Irene still sits in Beatriz's living room, watching carefully as the toys are created. Gillian has joined her now and they both have the final say over whether the dolls are beautiful enough to sell.
